When to use

This tag is intended to identify articles with historical images that have been upscaled by an AI process. Software such as Remini or MyHeritage allows an old or low quality image to be increased to a much higher resolution, with the AI filling in details based on its general knowledge of what people look like. Such upscaling may introduce inaccuracies or speculative details which are not present in the source material, or wrongly imply a level of image quality that did not exist at the time the image was created.

Typical issues are portraits being restored with excessive, invented detail on the eyes, nose and mouth (while clothes and background remain largely unchanged), faint colours being added to the faces of monochrome images, and the AI struggling to correctly upscale spectacles and patterned clothing.

The manual of style for images recommends that such images be replaced with their original historical versions. In some cases the original image is also available on Commons and can be easily and quickly replaced; in others, the uploader has only provided the AI upscaled version and the original must be retrieved from the cited source.

How to use

Place {{Upscaled images|date=November 2024}} at the top of the disputed article, then explain your reasons on the page's talk page. If the date is not included it will likely be added later by a bot.

Optional parameters include:

  • |1= (or an empty parameter): changes the default descriptor (i.e., "article"). For example, {{Upscaled images|section}} changes it to "section".
